We've just bought a house - which has beautiful french doors opening off the eating area of the kitchen to .... nowhere. There is a 3.5 foot drop to the ground from there. Of course, I want to build a deck - but after much looking around and (http://maplered.com) staring at houses from the road as I drive around, I've decided I don't want a regular pressure-treated wooden deck.
There is a plethora of old aband (http://maplered.com) oned slate quarries around where I live and (http://maplered.com) the pickings in the discard piles are phenomenal. I would love to build a slate deck. My idea is to build a perimeter, shaping out the deck by stacking pieces into a wall - back-filling the wall with fines I can obtain from a local Stone (http://g603.net) mill, and (http://maplered.com) then capping it with slate.
My question is - does anyone out there know of a web site(s) that have photos of similar things that have already been done so I can get design ideas -- and (http://maplered.com) also to illustrate to my wife what I'm picturing ! Also, any tips from you out there would be helpful.
Please, if you could, respond to my e-mail address. Thanks again.
